Sorah Al-A'la ( The Most High )

Sorah Al-A'la ( The Most High ) - Verses Number 19

سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى ( 1 )

Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High,

الَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ( 2 )

Who created and proportioned

وَالَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ ( 3 )

And who destined and [then] guided

وَالَّذِي أَخْرَجَ الْمَرْعَىٰ ( 4 )

And who brings out the pasture

فَجَعَلَهُ غُثَاءً أَحْوَىٰ ( 5 )

And [then] makes it black stubble.

سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰ ( 6 )

We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget,

إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ الْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ ( 7 )

Except what Allah should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.

وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ( 8 )

And We will ease you toward ease.

فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ الذِّكْرَىٰ ( 9 )

So remind, if the reminder should benefit;

سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ ( 10 )

He who fears [Allah] will be reminded.

وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا الْأَشْقَى ( 11 )

But the wretched one will avoid it -

الَّذِي يَصْلَى النَّارَ الْكُبْرَىٰ ( 12 )

[He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,

ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ ( 13 )

Neither dying therein nor living.

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ( 14 )

He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself

وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّىٰ ( 15 )

And mentions the name of his Lord and prays.

بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا ( 16 )

But you prefer the worldly life,

وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ ( 17 )

While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي الصُّحُفِ الْأُولَىٰ ( 18 )

Indeed, this is in the former scriptures,

صُحُفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ ( 19 )

The scriptures of Abraham and Moses.

The Difference between Advising and CondemningIn this classical treatise, Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) discusses the differences between advising and condemning, which is an extremely important topic since it is very common that the two are confused for one another. For the most part, his talk revolves around the dealings and affairs of the scholars, and how it was from their way to advise and accept the truth from one another. In Medina and Kufa, as well as other cities of early Muslim rule, schools of law had to be developed, but it took the genius of Muhammad b. Idris al-Shafi’i, born in the year 150AH/767AD, to establish the principles by which the various legal doctrines could be synthesised into a coherent system. In the Risala, which laid down the basis for such a synthesis, al-Shafi’i established the overriding authority, next only to the Qur’an, of the Sunnah or example of the Prophet Muhammad as transmitted in the traditions.
